Moving Beyond Survival Mode: Low Income African Americans

June 24 , 2010

MEE Productions' latest research report and documentary, Moving Beyond Survival Mode, reveals how low-income African Americans are dealing with the unique form of urban trauma that comes with living in inner city, underserved communities. Through authentic community voices, MEE documents the kinds of stressors young people are experiencing, how they are attempting to cope and the resiliency and protective factors that may be a ray of hope for their thriving, vs. merely surviving.

In this video clip, Dr. Joe White talks about the many challenges that make the journey to healthy adulthood a treacherous one for young Black males in our society. Describing the state of mental health of Black men as  "dismal," he believes Black males face a tougher struggle to lead successful lives because they are being raised in a society that is both hostile and non-supportive.
