California African American Museum (CAAM) and Verizon presented Rollin’ Out 365 Days of Black History Celebration, where hundreds of youth and families came out to learn about the contributions African Americans, Latinos and other athletes of color have made towards the influence of surfing, roller-skating and skateboarding.  The all-day “Family Fun Fest” included a skateboard competition, a documentary screening of On The Grind by James Cheek, skate demonstrations by L.A.’s Scooby Brothers, art activities and much more.  The youth showed up in record numbers and lined up early to be the first 50 to receive a free skateboard deck.  In connection with How We Roll, a current exhibit at CAAM, Rollin’ Out 365 Days of Black History Celebration educated participants about the earliest surfers who dared to break the color barrier and ride the highest waves, and the roller skating wizards that transformed the simple glide around the rink with athletic power and grace.  “We were pleased to have so many young people visiting the museum to learn about their heritage,” said CAAM Executive Director Charmaine Jefferson.  “It’s our goal to continuously provide programs that attract a diverse group of youth and families.”  The exhibit How We Roll is featured at CAAM through March 20, 2011.
